Our Goal

Student Charter

Whereas George Waters Middle School is an institution dedicated to the highest ideals in education, it is essential that students be aware of their rights and responsibilities. It is imperative that an individual’s responsibilities are executed in a manner that ensures that the rights of others are protected.

Student Rights

I, as a student, have the right to receive an education in an environment that is conducive to learning.
I, as a student, have the right to be in an environment that is safe and secure, both physically and emotionally.
Consistent with the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, the schools:

i)      treat all students equally and fairly
ii)     treat all incidents in a professional manner
iii)    react in a manner consistent with the purpose of  ensuring the well-being of students

Appeal Process

Any parent or student has the right to challenge the disciplinary decision/action.
They can discuss their concerns with the principal. Further appeal can be made to the Superintendent at the Board Office. Appeals of expulsion may be made to the Board.

UNACCEPTABLE BEHAVIOURS
RESPONSES

- All staff, students and visitors are entitled to a school free of abuse.
- Practice self-discipline and self-control at all times.
- Deal with conflicts in a non-violent, peaceful manner and seek mediation assistance to resolve issues or conflicts.
- Be respectful of ourselves, others and the environment.
- Interact with others in a positive, courteous and cooperative manner.
- Value the diversity of our school population while developing an understanding and tolerance of all individuals within our school.
- Contribute to a positive learning environment.
- Take responsibility and ownership for one's own learning and actions.
- Display a positve attitude by being attentive, punctual, well-organized, appropriately dressed and willing to take advice.
- Produce quality work and develop good work habits.
- Respect and care for the physical property of the school, students, staff and community.
- Contribute to the classroom and school community.
- Develop pride in self  and in our school through individual or group and/or team effort.
- Inappropriate physical contact or physical aggression.
- Gang involvement; the wearing of gang colours.
- Possession of a weapon.
- Bullying, harassment and abuse (physical, verbal, psychological, sexual)
- Harassment or discrimination based on physical or mental disability, race, creed, colour, nationality, religion, gender, sexual orientation, family status
- Extortion
- Disturbing the learning of others
- Possession, consumption, supplying/selling of alcohol or illicit or non-illicit drugs and/or paraphernalia and/or tobacco products
- At school under the influence of alcohol/drugs
- Smoking on school grounds or in clear visibility of school
- Internet misuse
- Theft
- Defacing and damaging school property
- Graffiti
- A removal from the situation for period of time (cool off)
- Student detention (before school, at noon, or after school)
- Restitution
- interviews and conferences that may involve students, staff, parents and division personnel
- Developing and implementing a behaviour plan or contract that may include counseling, mentoring or mediation
- Withdrawal of privileges
- Making amends either monetarily or through school-based community service
- Suspension: in-school or out-of-school
- Required change of locations for studies
- Expulsion (involvement of superintendent and Board).
Other School Rules

- Under Manitoba Education Policy, teachers may suspend a student from their classes for up to two days/classes.
- The Principal may suspend for up to five days.
- Parents will be advised in all cases of suspension.
- During out-of-school suspensions, students may not have access to the building and grounds without prior administrative approval and may not participate in co-curricular activities.
- Some board policies require police involvement as a consequence, and the principals, at their discretion, may involve the police for any incident.
- Academic Integrity- plagiarism and cheating are unacceptable and will be dealt with according to Board policy.

You can take a stand against bullying, harassment, crime, vandalism and graffiti and alcohol and drug abuse.
A program tip line has been extablished to assist all stakeholders in making our schools and communities safe places to live and learn.
